Minutes Make a Mile's Difference - AllerSense Knows It
User-friendly and Innovative, AllerSense is buying anaphylactic shock patients the necessary time for survival.
THE ALLERSENSE MISSION
Allergic Reaction Detection - Even Before Symptoms
The AllerSense patch empowers individuals with life-threatening allergies by providing real-time, reliable detection of peanut allergic reactions before symptoms appear. Leveraging cutting-edge biosensor technology, our wearable patch monitors and alerts users to the early onset of peanut allergic reactions before symptoms even set in, offering precious time to act and seek treatment.

Peanut allergies are the most prevalent of any food allergen, afflicting 158 million people globally, and roughly 2% of the United States population, according to a study by the University of Tennessee’s Dr. Jay Lieberman et al, which also notes that these numbers are “increasing in prevalence”. Further, peanut (or tree nut) reactions are responsible for 46% of anaphylactic deaths between children and adults, according to Mount Sinai allergist Karina Rottela et al.

Directly after peanut consumption, time is extremely valuable – and in low supply for the affected: According to Medline Plus, after the onset of symptoms, those in anaphylaxis have roughly 15 minutes before death, with the rapid arrival of breathing difficulties, rashes, sensation, or swelling dangerously escalating without the presence of epinephrine, the only medicine that can reverse the effects of anaphylaxis.

It may come to mind that the epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) is a possible competitor, although this is not the case. Epinephrine auto-injectors are still needed to control the allergic reaction, but does not buy the individual time to access the injector. Allersense provides the customer with a ‘warning sign’ of the found peanut proteins in their interstitial fluids which is a form of safety that the commonly used EpiPen does not provide, further ensuring the need for Allersense within the food allergy treatment market. With AllerSense, these fatalities and potentially even reaching anaphylaxis in the first place can be avoided.

Recognizing the allergic reaction early is vital to patient survival, with anaphylactic symptoms mostly appearing between 20 minutes and 2 hours, according to Better Health Channel and the Mayo Clinic. An immediate notification of contact with the allergen could buy minutes or even hours to action before anaphylaxis sets in, and be the difference between life and death for a patient.
